Coton started the game brightly, with the visitors keeping us at bay. However, it was a free flowing move that saw the Green Army take the lead in the 23rd minute. Jay D Lionga floated a ball into the box, allowing Jay Henry to beat his defender and fire his low cross across the box to Ross Evans, who made no mistake with his effort into the bottom corner.
We doubled our lead in the 39th minute when Jay Henry was again the provider, firing a near post cross to Jon Letford whose neat finish beat the ‘keeper to make it 2-0.
Coton had a number of efforts hit the woodwork, as we continued to push for a third. However the second half brought impetus to the visitors who reduced the deficit in the 56th minute with a counter attack down the right hand side.
Things got worse for Coton when we were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute following a second yellow card for Louie O’ Connor - with the Daventry Town player involved in the incident lucky to escape a red after grabbing O’ Connor round the throat and throwing him to the ground.
This sparked the Green Army into life, with Henry striking the bar for a third time via the ‘keepers fingertips. The resulting corner did reap benefits though as Henry flicked the ball to Letford who smartly controlled and spun his defender before firing into the bottom corner.
Overall, a great opening performance by Coton with 3 vital points earned to start the season off the right way.
