Opening Day Defeat for the Green

Coton were left disappointed as they ended their opening game of the season in defeat to an effective Wednesfield side. The visitors brought the game to the Green from the off with the hosts able to withstand the early pressure and grow into the game over the first 15 minutes.

The first big chance of the game came after 4 minutes when Wednesfield opened up the Coton defence down the right hand side. The Wednesfield winger was able to beat the man and cut back for the forward to tap the ball into the empty net, but fortunately for Coton his sliced effort went wide of the right post. This proved to be one of only a few chances during the first period, with the Green Army looking utilise the pace of Elliot Edwards and new club captain Ty Richards-Burke up top.

The moment of the half fell to Coton keeper Alfie Pyott who’s reaching athletic dive saw him get his fingertips to a long range effort to tip the ball over the bar to keep the scores level going into half time.

After what was a fairly even first half, the second definitely belonged to the visitors and they showed impetus and desire to take the lead in the 52nd minute. A high deep cross from the right hand side evaded all of the Coton defence and allowed the forward to make amends for his first half miss and tap in a volley at the back post. The pressure continued from Wednesfield with Green looking to play more on the counter attack and this nearly paid off on the hour mark. Richards-Burke set free Edwards who was able to beat the last defender, but could only drag his effort wide of the left post.

The momentum was firmly knocked out of Coton in the 70th minute when the visitors were able to double their lead. A passage of play through the middle of the pitch saw a lack of pressure from the Coton rearguard, allowing the Wednesfield attacker to fire a low drive into the bottom corner leaving Pyott no chance in Greens goal.

The final 20 minutes of the game played out evenly just as the first half had, with neither team creating anything of note. Coton move forward to a midweek clash away at Ingles where they will be looking to kickstart their season and get the first points on the board.
